It’s been a long time since I dipped into the wonderful world that is Japanese Rock (aka Jrock). I’m at that point where I don’t often look for new acts, just simply replay old artists. Not quite sure if that makes me grumpy or just highly dedicated to the handful of musicians. That’s for another conversation, though.
After coming across a song that always gets at my heart, I thought it would be fun to share some of the best artists I’ve ever heard.
Let’s talk a walk down my short list:
X Japan will always own my heart. I’ve seen them live and it doesn’t matter how large or intimate the venue–they go all out. This sound makes me cry every time I hear it. I can’t help it. And the fans always do this at lives. As soon as Toshi’s vocals fade away in emotion, the audiences takes over.
Gackt was the second Jrocker I was every introduced to on my musical journey. His tracks are always lively. This particular music video was for one of the theme songs for video game Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. It was also a final contender for a hip hop routine I did in a talent show while studying abroad.
Hyde. What can I say? First of all, he’s the lead singer of bands L’arc en Ciel & VAMPS. The former band being my introduction to all things Jrock. This song was for the film Hyde starred in, Kagen no Tsuki (aka “Last Quarter”). It’s a haunting track and he’s actually singing in English. I really wanted his hairstyle and outfit when I first saw the film. Good times.
SID is another group still around that I love. Alibi was my first sampling of their work. I love that they have always shifted between genres. This track is just from last year. There are some nice subtle (and not-so-subtle) throwbacks to their old VK days.
I’ll be going further in-depth on my music blog, so I’ll leave the list here for now. Hopefully there was at least something of interest and/or new to your music library. Let me know which was your favorite!
